Venture Niagara provides a broad range of business services to local entrepreneurs.
These services are offered to loan clients and also to entrepreneurs in need
of assistance developing a new opportunity or addressing concerns of ongoing
operations.
Venture Niagara’s help ranges from activities as basic as identifying
programs that support a specific need such as staffing, to helping with market
research, developing a business plan or one on one counseling. Business counseling
is typically provided by one of our staff members, or an experienced Venture
Niagara volunteer. In some cases, we make arrangements for local experts to assess
a business to determine its strengths and weaknesses so that the company can
become more profitable over the long term.
Venture Niagara also hosts seminars
throughout the year. Workshops are often held in partnership with other local
organizations or through our own resources. Past topics include “9-Minute
Business Date,” “Preparing a Business Plan,” “Marketing
Your Business” and “How to sell your Goods and Services to the Federal
Government.”

Venture Niagara Community Economic Development Manager, Sue
Morin, and Professor Laura Cousens of Brock University met with Welland
Mayor Damian Goulbourne late in 2008 to discuss how his community
could better benefit from sports tourism through the expertise available
at Brock. Over the winter semester Dr. Cousens developed an “Apprentice” style
student competition as part of her Strategic Alliances course in
Brock’s 4th year Sports Management program. Ideas and strategies
developed by students would be presented to Welland Sports Tourism
Alliance (WSTA) members to link sports organizations and businesses
in that city to generate more opportunities and realize greater benefits.
Eight teams of students presented their strategies on a variety of
designated themes to a panel of WSTA members on April 1. The ideas
were innovative and many were applicable to strengthening the local
economy through sports tourism. The team of Alex Francis, Jen Kalanda,
Allison Larsen, Amanda Parlett and Erin Saj won the Apprentice prize
package including: golf at Whisky Run Golf Course; passes to Nightmares
Fear Factory, Niagara Parks Commission venues, Welland County Motorcycle
Club, and Illuminaqua on the Welland Recreational Canal; as well
as tickets to Greg Frewin Theatre and Shaw Festival Theatre; wine
tasting at Chateau Des Charmes Winery; and $500 in cash provided
by Venture Niagara CFDC.
At the conclusion of the presentations WSTA
Chair Anthony Pasto stated, “We are very appreciative of the
ideas and suggestion from all of these exceptional Brock students.
The presentations were fantastic! Dr. Cousens and her students are
to be commended for their hard work and the relationship developed
with the Welland Sports Tourism Alliance.” For more information
